Greeley City Council selected David “Craig” Huddleston to fill the Ward 1 vacancy, with a swearing-in set for May 19 and service through 2027.

The Greeley Tribune’s Tyler Duncan reports that the Greeley City Council selected David “Craig” Huddleston to fill the Ward 1 seat vacated by Tommy Butler, who stepped down in March to pursue the House District 50 seat. Huddleston was one of six finalists interviewed before the council’s regular meeting and will be sworn in by resolution at the May 19 meeting, serving until the 2027 election.

Huddleston told council members he appreciates Ward 1’s history and wants the area to become the vibrant heart of Greeley. He also said he wants to focus on raising wages for blue-collar workers, calling them the people whose “blood, sweat and tears” built the city. That is a good place to start, especially in a community where work boots have done more for the skyline than consultant decks ever will.

The Bullet Point Brief

  • Greeley City Council selected David “Craig” Huddleston to represent Ward 1. Welcome to public service, Councilman. Please keep your tray table upright and your sense of humor handy.
  • Ward 1 covers the northern area of downtown Greeley, which means Huddleston steps into a seat tied directly to one of the city’s most important areas for growth, redevelopment, and civic identity.
  • Huddleston has lived in Greeley for three years and said he wants to help make the city a “city on a hill.” Ambitious? Sure. But local government could use more ambition and fewer PowerPoint naps.
  • He said his focus includes improving wages for blue-collar workers. In Weld County, that is not just a talking point. That is the backbone of the place.
  • Mayor Dale Hall said Huddleston got the four votes needed for appointment, though the city did not immediately release the full vote record. Because even simple local-government news must occasionally wander into the open-records thicket wearing flip-flops.

My Bottom Line

It is good to see Greeley has a new member of City Council. God bless Councilman Huddleston and his willingness to jump in. Public service is not easy, and local government may be the least glamorous and most practical level of the whole enterprise.

I look forward to working with him. Greeley and Weld County have much work to do together, and that work matters. We are talking about public safety, roads, facilities, downtown redevelopment, housing, economic development, water, infrastructure, and the daily business of serving people who do not care which government logo is on the letterhead. They just want the problem solved.

Ward 1 is an important part of Greeley’s story. It carries history, working-class roots, downtown challenges, and real opportunity. Huddleston’s comments about blue-collar workers are welcome, because this region was built by people who showed up, put in the hours, and did the hard things without asking for applause.

Local government works best when city and county leaders keep talking, keep planning, and keep their egos out of the machinery. We have big projects ahead and shared responsibilities in front of us. I wish Councilman Huddleston well and look forward to the work.
