Colorado Democrats Push ICE Facility Rules While State Problems Pile Up

Colorado has enough on its plate already.

Colorado Democrats are advancing new state requirements on ICE facilities while critics argue the legislature should focus on roads, schools, safety, and the budget.

The Denver Gazette reports that Colorado Democrats are advancing House Bill 1276, which would impose new state-level requirements on ICE detention facilities, including expanded inspections, health and safety mandates, and environmental impact studies. The bill also increases civil liability for sharing immigration status information with federal authorities and requires new training and policies for law enforcement related to federal immigration law. fileciteturn17file0

Supporters argue the bill is necessary due to reported deaths and poor conditions in ICE facilities, while critics say the legislature is wasting time on federal immigration issues while Colorado faces serious problems like a $1 billion budget shortfall, struggling schools, and deteriorating infrastructure. The bill passed the House along party lines and now heads to the Senate.

The Bullet Point Brief

  • Democrats are pushing new state regulations on ICE detention facilities. Because apparently federal immigration policy now runs through the Colorado legislature.
  • The bill adds inspections, environmental studies, and expands liability around sharing immigration information. More rules, more layers, more cost.
  • Supporters point to deaths and conditions in ICE facilities as justification. That is the emotional hook.
  • Critics, including Rep. Ryan Gonzalez, say the state has bigger problems. Roads, schools, healthcare, budget. You know, actual Colorado issues.
  • It passed along party lines. No surprise there. Another day, another ideological split under the gold dome.

My Bottom Line

I am with Rep. Gonzalez on this one.

Colorado has 99 problems and ICE ain’t one.

This is a federal issue. Full stop. Immigration enforcement, detention standards, all of it. That is not the job of the Colorado legislature, no matter how badly they want to insert themselves into the conversation.

But here we go again.

Instead of focusing on transportation, where our roads are falling apart, or education, where too many kids are not at grade level, or public safety, or a budget that is already stretched thin, the ruling Democrats decide this is where they want to spend their time.

Why?

Because it checks a political box.

Because it lets them signal virtue to their base.

Because it is good for fundraising emails.

Meanwhile, the stuff that actually impacts everyday Coloradans keeps getting pushed to the side.

This is the pattern. Focus on national issues you cannot control. Ignore local issues you are responsible for.

And then act surprised when people feel like their government is not working for them.

If you want to make life better for Coloradans, focus on Colorado.

Fix the roads. Improve schools. Get spending under control. Give people some of their money back.

That is the job.

Not this.
