Why I’m Doing This: The Scott Sheet, ScottKJames.com, and Why I Keep Running My Mouth

This little slice of the internet – ScottKJames.com – has been an extension of me since the Clinton administration. It’s gone through more facelifts than a Beverly Hills socialite, with bursts of activity followed by long naps. Over the years, it’s been a backstage pass to my radio shows and a place to show more of my personal side.

But things changed in July 2023 when I “retired” from radio. (Put heavy quotes around retired – clearly, I still have things to say and am currently entertaining offers.)

During the Scott and Sadie era, we intentionally kept things apolitical. The goal was simple: get everyone to tune in – Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Socialist, or whatever other flavor of chaos you subscribe to. So, my political voice stayed mostly zipped. Kind of ironic, considering that while cracking jokes on-air, I was also serving as a Weld County Commissioner – a job I got through a partisan election.

Truth is, I’ve been a Republican since I registered to vote in 1980. I just didn’t always shout it from the rooftops. Now I will, and here’s why there’s an “R” behind my name: Because I believe in small government, big freedom, and lower taxes – basically, I want government as far out of my life as a long-forgotten psycho ex after a restraining order. I’m all about personal responsibility, strong borders, gun rights, and torching the bureaucratic dumpster fire that eats our paycheck and dumbs down our kids. And yeah, I’m a Reagan Republican – back when the GOP had a spine, a brain, and a damn clue about optimism, strength, and not being a circus of clowns fighting over who can shout “patriot” the loudest.

But as a mass-audience radio guy, I always kept that quiet.

However, when I hung up the headphones, I knew it was time to lift that political voice – boldly. I understand the authority I do and don’t have as a County Commissioner. I don’t go rogue. I stay in my lane. But constituents deserve to know where I stand. There’s an expectation that I use what Teddy Roosevelt famously called the “bully pulpit” – a platform of influence, not coercion. It’s where a public servant speaks out, shines a light, and stirs the pot – not by force, but by voice.

So now, with this latest version of the site – and the companion newsletter, The Scott Sheet, I’m standing on that pulpit. Loud. Unapologetic. And hopefully, useful.

Let me be very clear:
I. AM. NOT. A. JOURNALIST.
Never claimed to be, never wanted to be. I’ve got massive respect for actual journalists who chase the truth like their lives depend on it – because sometimes, they do. We need them. Jefferson was right: a functioning press is critical for an informed citizenry.

Unfortunately, I’m not convinced we have a functioning press anymore – at least not in the mainstream. But there are still truth-seekers out there, and I salute them.

Me? I’m an opinion hack. About 80% of what you’ll see here is me reacting to what’s already in the news – “News and Comment,” as one of my radio heroes put it. The other 20% is just personal ramblings and whatever wild idea hits me at 3 a.m.

But 100% of it is opinion. Mine.
Not gospel. Not journalism. Just one guy’s take.

That’s why your engagement matters. Comment. Share. Push back. Agree. Disagree. Just participate. The United States of America itself is the only nation on the planet formed of an idea. We are citizens of a Constitutional Republic, and one of the most sacred duties we have is to get in the arena of ideas – to engage in the battle of ideas. Civilly. Passionately. Relentlessly.

That’s what drives me to keep this going – the site, the Sheet, and come September 2, 2025, the ScottCast. It’s all about creating conversation. Honest conversation. Snarky, yes. Sincere, always.

I was blessed with a 40-year career behind the mic. I still speak at events and civic groups. God made me a communicator – and I firmly believe that when He gives you a gift, you’d better damn well use it for something bigger than yourself.

That’s what I try to do here.
Will I tick you off? Yep.
Will I make you laugh while you’re mad? I sure hope so.
But above all, I hope I make you think.

Yes, I’m partisan. I’m a Republican. A conservative. A Christian. I see life through a Biblical worldview. If you’re the exact opposite? That’s okay. Let’s still talk. Let’s reason together (Isaiah 1:18). Not scream. Not meme-war. Not throw word grenades from our respective social media silos. Let’s actually talk like grown-ass adults.

God gave me a fast tongue, a sharp wit, and the ability to take complicated issues and boil them down for regular folks – because I am a regular folk. And no, I don’t get paid to do this. This whole circus costs me a couple hundred bucks a month out of pocket. Call it an inspired hobby… or divine compulsion.

But I do have one expectation of you: Engage.
Think. Share. Comment. Spread the word.

Citizenship isn’t a spectator sport.
You want Weld County to thrive? Want Colorado to turn around? Want to (gasp) make America great again? Then show up.
Go to a school board meeting. Sit in on a city council session. Hell, put your name on a ballot if you feel the call. We don’t fix the Republic by rage-posting from the couch. We fix it by getting our butts in the game.

I started all this on a whim. No big launch plan. Just a guy who missed talking to you. Since then, thanks to you, we’ve seen 44% growth. There are now over 16,000 proud Sheet Heads, and I won’t stop until we’re in the hundreds of thousands. Not for my ego – this ain’t about me. It’s about purpose. It’s about fostering meaningful conversation and citizen action.

Sure, I’ll talk politics. But I’m also going to lean more into the stuff that matters even more: faith, family, truth. I believe that many of the problems our society faces won’t be solved by more government, but by more God.

So yeah…
That’s why I’m doing this.

Come now, let us reason and build something together.
