Weekly Theme Reminder:
This week, we’re exploring God’s promise to always be with us, no matter what we face.
Welcome back to Jesus and the Average Joe! This week, we’ve been exploring how God’s presence enables us to face fear. Today’s verse, Psalm 23:4, is one of the most comforting promises in Scripture, reminding us that God walks with us even in our darkest valleys.
Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.
Psalms 23:4
Life has its share of dark valleys—moments when fear threatens to overwhelm us. Whether it’s a diagnosis, a loss, or uncertainty about the future, those valleys can feel like endless shadows. But Psalm 23:4 gives us hope.
I remember walking through difficult seasons in my life when I felt utterly lost. This verse would come to mind. I study the New Living Translation (NLT) version of the Bible – so my translation does not echo the more familiar “shadow of the valley of death” translation. Which to me is even more applicable, because those “dark valley” days may not include death – although some of my darkest days have. The verse comforts and reminds me that God wasn’t just aware of my pain—He was walking with me, protecting and comforting me every step of the way.
David, who wrote this psalm, understood fear and hardship intimately. Yet, his confidence in God’s presence allowed him to declare, “I will not be afraid.” It’s a bold statement, rooted not in self-assurance but in trust that God is near.
Whatever valley you’re walking through today, remember that God is close beside you. His presence doesn’t always remove the valley, but it transforms how we walk through it. He is your protector, your comforter, and your guide.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for being with me in life’s darkest moments. Help me to trust Your protection and comfort, even when the path ahead feels uncertain. Teach me to walk through the valleys with faith. Amen.
Challenge:
Write down one fear or challenge you’re facing today. Then, reflect on Psalm 23:4 and remind yourself that God is walking beside you, offering comfort and protection.
