SNAP set to stop Nov. 1. Colorado should ask Bennet and Hickenlooper why.

Written by Scott K. James

AP says USDA posted a notice that SNAP will not pay out Nov. 1 if the shutdown continues. Here’s the real Colorado story and who should answer for it.

The Associated Press, in a FOX31 Denver post, reports that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has posted a notice saying federal food aid will not be issued on November 1. The piece explains that the Trump administration is not tapping roughly five billion dollars in contingency funds, and that SNAP supports about one in eight Americans.

According to the AP write-up, USDA says the well has run dry and warns of an “inflection point for Senate Democrats.” The shutdown began October 1 and is now the second-longest on record. The article frames a looming cutoff that would widen the pain unless Congress reaches a deal in days.

The Bullet Point Brief

• USDA notice says no SNAP benefits on November 1 unless Washington gets its act together. The pantry light is blinking red.
• Administration is not using five billion in contingency funds. USDA says that pot is for disasters, not regular benefits.
• SNAP helps about one in eight Americans. That is a lot of kitchen tables about to get very quiet.
• Shutdown started October 1 and is the second-longest on record. A government that cannot pass basics is now failing groceries.
• USDA’s quote points to an “inflection point for Senate Democrats.” Translation: the Senate is where this logjam lives.

My Bottom Line

Media will try to hang this on the Trump administration. That is lazy. The House moved a clean continuing resolution. The Senate keeps voting it down. In Colorado, that means when SNAP shuts off on November 1, the blame sits with Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper. They voted for a clean CR before. So why not now? Politics. That is the whole story.

Here is what that means on the ground. In Weld County, seven million dollars in SNAP benefits flow each month to more than forty thousand people. When the cards stop swiping, families will not eat spin from a press release. They need adults in the Senate to pass the same clean CR they already supported. If Bennet and Hickenlooper decide pain is a strategy, then they own the pain.

And while Democrats play brinkmanship with dinner, the church must step up. If the church actually practiced the teachings of Jesus at scale, government would be a lot less necessary. So yes, we will rally food banks and neighbors. But neighbors should not have to rescue Washington from its own pride. Senators, pass the clean CR and feed your people.
