At the historic Fort Lupton site, surrounded by supporters and fellow Weld County stalwarts, State Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer made it official: she’s running for governor. A county commissioner, state senator, budget hawk, and unapologetic straight-shooter, Kirkmeyer launched her campaign on a promise not to raise taxes, to “fix the darn roads,” and to actually partner with local governments instead of dictating from Denver.
Kirkmeyer now steps into a crowded GOP primary, but unlike some of her colleagues, she’s already got something rare in Colorado Republican politics: electability. Her résumé spans both executive and legislative experience, and her campaign is built on fiscal discipline, affordability, education, and public safety. If she wins, she’d be Colorado’s first female governor.
The Bullet Point Brief
- It’s time. Kirkmeyer framed her launch as a reset for Colorado, pledging not to raise taxes and vowing that “Colorado’s best days are ahead of us.”
- Fix the roads, finally. One of her first promises: “fix the damn roads,” a shot at years of mismanaged transportation priorities.
- Local government roots. She highlighted her track record as a Weld County commissioner, stressing collaboration instead of top-down mandates.
- Crowded GOP field. Kirkmeyer joins names like Mark Baisley, Scott Bottoms, Jason Mikesell, and Greg Lopez. On the Dem side: Bennet and Weiser loom.
- Target acquired. Democrats wasted no time, branding her as “too extreme” and linking her to Trump. Translation: they’re worried.
My Bottom Line
I am on record as being an opinion hack, not a journalist, so know this: I am all in for Barbara Kirkmeyer. I know 15 other republicans are running, I know several of them, and I am sure they are all good folks. But I’ve known Barb Kirkmeyer long enough to say this without flinching: she’s the real deal. Smart, passionate, relentless, and armed with actual governing experience. Not just speeches. Not just slogans. She’s done the hard work in county government – balancing budgets, working with local officials, cutting through red tape – and she’s done it in the legislature, too. That combination of executive and legislative chops is rare, and it’s exactly what Colorado needs to claw its way back from the cliff.
Yes, the GOP bench is deep this cycle, and many of the candidates are solid folks. But Barb has what they don’t: statewide viability. She’s got a command of the budget that makes bureaucrats sweat, she knows how to bridge the divide between state and local, and she’s got the drive to turn Colorado back into a place families can afford to live.
Democrats are already trotting out the predictable attack lines – Trump this, abortion that, “too extreme” yada yada. They’re nervous, and they should be. Because Kirkmeyer’s campaign is going to cut through the noise with something rare: credibility. She doesn’t have to reinvent herself or hide behind focus-grouped slogans. She just has to remind Coloradans she’s been doing the job of governing while Polis was busy posing for glossy magazine spreads.
Mark it down: if Republicans want to win, and not just make a statement, Barbara Kirkmeyer is their ticket. She’s an unstoppable force, and she’s got my support.

God Bless Barbara! All of the rest of the GOP candidates just need to closet their ego’s step aside and get behind her. She is by fare the best GOP candidate for governor that the republicans have or have had in Colorado quite some time. For people that are not familiar with her she will work her ass off for you she is very intelligent along with common sense, a rarity these days! She definitely knows what is best for Colorado and how to get it done. I just hope the Colorado independents and moderates get behind her, with out them it will be a difficult run for her.
