Barb Kirkmeyer to the Capitol: Skip the Special Session, Stage an Intervention

Written by Scott K. James

Kirkmeyer’s op‑ed rips the “Special Session Show,” arguing Colorado’s crisis is overspending, not revenue. Cut costs, skip theater, stage an intervention.

Senator Barb Kirkmeyer just took a political two-by-four to the Democrat majority at the Statehouse, and bless her for it. In her op-ed, she lays it out plainly: Colorado’s “budget crisis” is not about revenue, it’s about Democrats spending like frat boys with their first credit card. For years, they’ve ballooned government with thousands of new hires, shiny new offices, and “essential” programs that make TikTok look like infrastructure. Now they’re crying poor and demanding a “special session” to cover their tracks – complete with the usual finger-pointing at Trump and Republicans.

The Bullet Point Brief

  • Democrats blew a hole in the budget long before Trump’s tax cuts became their favorite scapegoat. The red ink was homegrown.
  • Seven years, 7,000 new state employees, new bureaucratic fiefdoms galore. That’s not budgeting, that’s empire-building.
  • Their “solution”? Raid reserves, kill tax breaks, and smack small businesses and workers with disguised tax hikes. Bravo.
  • Even the Governor’s budget director admitted: “Right now, we do not have the cash to pay our bills.” Translation: They maxed out the Visa.
  • Republicans offered an actual fix – saving $663 million by pausing a refund – but Democrats would rather put on a circus act called the “Special Session Show.”

My Bottom Line

My friend, my former fellow commissioner, and my Senator, Barb Kirkmeyer, is right on the money. I’ve been screaming this for months: Democrats don’t have a revenue problem. They have a spending addiction. And like every addict, they’ll blame anyone but themselves. This time it’s Trump, tomorrow it’ll be “the billionaires,” and next week maybe the Tooth Fairy.

Barb is the most effective Republican in Colorado, and no one knows the numbers like she does. Her photographic memory is annoying as hell, but it also means she can rattle off every nickel and dime these clowns have burned through. And she’s right: Colorado doesn’t need another taxpayer-funded therapy session for Democrat guilt. It needs an intervention. Cold turkey. Take away the state credit card and lock the liquor cabinet.

The “Special Session Show” is nothing but political Kabuki – a stage for Democrats to wring their hands and pat themselves on the back while working families get stuck with the bill. If there’s any justice, voters will give them the intervention they truly deserve: unemployment.

  • Of course you and Barb are right, but as frustrating, annoying, laughable or sad this situation may be the democrats will continue to vote these people (who failed civics & math classes) and others like them into office. Bottom line, the hard working tax paying folks will continue to pick up the tab for the ongoing ignorance in Denver. Truly shameful.
