Trump Wants Redskins Back—Misses the Point Entirely

Written by Scott K. James

Trump’s threatening to block a new stadium unless the Commanders change back their name. It’s classic Trump theater—loud, wrong, and missing the bigger picture.

President Trump is stirring them up for doing what he does best: cranking up the volume without checking where the mic’s plugged in. According to Forbes’ Zachary Folk, Trump claims he’ll block any deal for a new Washington Commanders stadium unless they switch back to their old name—the Redskins. Read that again: not immigration policy. Not fiscal reform. But… football team branding.

The Bullet Point Brief

  • Trump essentially threatened to throw his political weight around to undo a private company’s branding decision.
  • He called the Commanders’ name change a woke joke and suggested they revert—because apparently that’s top-of-mind policy now.
  • Like it or not, Washington’s football team blew millions on rebranding—and now we’re supposed to do it all over again… why?
  • Irony alert: The same guy upset about government forcing a name change is now attempting to force a name reversal. Who says politicians don’t recycle?

My Bottom Line

Look, I’m no fan of woke corporations tripping over themselves to virtue signal—you don’t erase real issues by slapping a new logo on a helmet. But this right here? This is performative conservatism wrapped in nostalgia and dipped in authoritarian sauce. I get it—some folks miss the old “Redskins” moniker like we miss gas under $2. But having the federal government—or hell, even Donald Trump—dictate what private companies call themselves? That’s not America-friendly; that’s banana republic bullcrap.

The reality is this: The team made a free market decision (under pressure or not), spent millions redesigning everything from jerseys to coffee mugs—and now Trump wants them to financially light it all on fire again for what amounts to headline bait. Two wrongs don’t make it right. Just because they caved once doesn’t mean you strong-arm them in the other direction. Why don’t we focus that energy on something useful—like fixing immigration, building infrastructure, or figuring out how many billions were eaten alive by green energy pipe dreams this week?

If fans hate the name that much? Stop buying tickets. Stop slapping COMMANDERS logos on your overpriced tailgate gear. Don’t drag Uncle Sam into your branding tantrum—let capitalism sort it out like it always should’ve.
