Polis Wants Your Opinion—After Wasting Your Money

Written by Scott K. James

Gov. Polis greenlit his vanity plaza, spent the cash, and NOW wants to know if you’re on board. Classic gaslight move from Colorado’s political magician.

Gov. Jared Polis has apparently just discovered public opinion… after years of ignoring it. The Denver Post reports that the state is now launching a survey to ask Coloradans whether they want this glorified Capitol Plaza makeover at all—after they’ve already sunk truckloads of taxpayer money into planning it.

The Bullet Point Brief

  • Polis rubber-stamped his concrete ego shrine before asking taxpayers what we thought. Bold move.
  • After backlash, he suddenly remembers public opinion matters—how politically convenient.
  • Money’s already been blown on planning and design before this phony survey.
  • Survey feels less like democracy and more like covering his political backside.
  • Californians who’ve colonized Colorado will probably still applaud him like trained seals.

My Bottom Line

Oh NOW he wants your opinion? After blowing who-knows-how-much on architects, renderings, and focus-grouped buzzwords like “transformation” and “placemaking,” the Governor decides it’s time to check in with the peasants. You don’t get credit for listening to voters AFTER you build the damn scaffolding—unless you’re trying out for Gaslighter-in-Chief. And spoilers: Polis nailed the audition.

Let’s call this shiny cement eyesore exactly what it is—a monument to self-love, ordered up by a governor who thinks legacy is something you pour into reinforced steel. This wasn’t about Coloradans; it was always about Jared. And now that he’s facing actual pushback—from rural folks who smell the B.S., from locals who miss parks not plazas—he panics and rolls out a faux-democratic opinion poll like a magician pulling a burned rabbit from a smoking top hat. Too little, too late, slick. If you wanted input? You ask FIRST, not after ordering dessert on somebody else’s tab.
