As I approach my 62nd birthday on December 9th, I find myself in a season of deep reflection. Birthdays have a way of prompting us to look back on the paths we’ve traveled and to consider the journey ahead. This particular milestone, nestled within the Advent season, offers a unique opportunity to ponder the intersection of personal growth and leadership in our ever-evolving world.

A Journey of Learning and Growth

Over the past six decades, I’ve witnessed profound changes in our society, politics, and the global landscape. From the civil rights movements to technological revolutions, each era has presented its own set of challenges and opportunities. Through it all, one constant has remained: the enduring wisdom found in Scripture.

Proverbs 16:31 tells us, “Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness.” This verse serves as a poignant reminder that with age comes not just the physical signs of growing older, but also the accumulation of experiences that shape our character and understanding. The gray hairs I’ve earned are not merely markers of time but symbols of the lessons learned and the wisdom gained.

Leadership in Times of Transition

Our nation is currently navigating significant transitions. The recent election has ushered in new leadership, bringing with it a wave of policy changes and a shift in national direction. Such periods of change can be unsettling, often stirring uncertainty and apprehension about the future.

In these moments, the words of Ecclesiastes 3:1 resonate deeply: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” This passage reminds us that change is an inherent part of life, and each season serves a purpose in God’s grand design. As leaders, it’s our responsibility to guide others through these transitions with faith and steadfastness.

The Role of Experience in Leadership

At 62, I recognize that my experiences—both triumphs and trials—have equipped me to lead with empathy and insight. The challenges I’ve faced have taught me resilience, while the successes have instilled a sense of gratitude and humility. This blend of experiences enables me to connect with others on a deeper level, understanding their struggles and aspirations.

Psalm 71:18 captures this sentiment beautifully: “Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.” This verse underscores the importance of sharing our stories and the lessons we’ve learned, serving as a bridge between generations.

Embracing the Future with Hope

As I step into this new chapter, I do so with a heart full of hope. The world may be fraught with challenges—political divisions, social unrest, and economic uncertainties—but I am reminded of the promise in Isaiah 40:31: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

This assurance empowers me to continue leading with vigor and purpose, trusting that God will provide the strength needed to navigate the complexities of our time.

A Call to Fellow Leaders

To my fellow leaders, especially those who have journeyed through many seasons of life, I encourage you to embrace the wisdom you’ve garnered. Let us use our experiences to mentor and guide the younger generation, fostering a legacy of faith, integrity, and resilience.

In the words of 1 Peter 5:2-3: “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.”

As we navigate the ever-changing tides of our world, may we remain steadfast in our commitment to lead with grace, wisdom, and unwavering faith.
